Summa Iru

This was one of the times when I was at home and didn’t know what to do. So, like any software funky, i started browsing. so not knowing what to search for just typed a word summa. Lol there was some content on the You tube. It was all about a swamiji giving some bhashan but fortunately it was in Tamil. Anyway I didn’t know how to spend time, decided to hear what the swamiji had to say.

He was talking about a poet Arunagirinathar who lived in Tamilnadu. He was the composer of Thiruppugaz, a set of poems praising Lord Murugan. The story starts when Arunagirinathar attempts to kill himself by jumping from the top of the temple tower. Just then Lord Murugan appeared in front of him and gave him a secret manthra. The Swamiji then paused and said do you know what was that great manthra? "Summa Iru, Sollara", means "Just be quite and don’t say anything". The swamiji further elaborated that it means not to just sit idle but to keep our mind in a state of stillness as it is always fond of wandering. If you can keep you mind in a still state without thinking of anything else, you will be in the present which will be a great present in our life. Thus he continued for some more time elaborating more on this...

The next day when I was in office, I got a short break in between meetings and as usual I started thinking on too many things in my small brain and suddenly the word "Summa Iru" also dropped into my mind.

Suddenly had a thought swamiji had really said something that is true. So again I did a Google search but with the exact word “Summa Iru” what else you can think doing rather than using a search engine if you happen to be a software engineer. Phew, there was lots of links related to this word. One of them was a thesis work submitted by a student and he added lots and lots of information which I was not able to digest.

Following is the actual song along with its meaning from the site Summa Iru - Power of Silence

Song
Semmaan Magalaith Thirudum Thirudan
Pemmaan Murugan Piravaan Iravaan
Summaa Iru Sollara Enralume
Ammaa Porul Onrum Arindhilane

Translation

"The Stealer who kidnapped Valli, born to the red deer;
That glorious Murugan, deathless and unborn -
When He, speechless, instructed me 'Be Silent',
What wonder! Even a single object I knew not."

Explanation

"What a wonder! When Lord Murugan - the stealer who kidnapped Valli
born of a red deer, the Glorious One, the birthless and deathless
One -instructed me through silence to 'Be Silent', Lo! I knew no object of the world."

Was really wondering how a simple word "Summa Iru" that we use day in and day out has so much of philosophical meaning!
