Every day i travel close to 50miles for work and back. I unfortunately travel during the peak hours (not much difference during non-peak hours). But most of the time I get stuck in the traffic.
While I wait, I look around and noticed that there is flow of vehicles on the right lane keep moving except my lane. Being optimistic, I keep waiting for the traffic to start flowing in my lane but all I had to do is have a bit of patients and WAIT.
Wait, WAITED and After a long wait, I switched to the right hand lane with the expectation that I can surpass the vehicles on my left. But unfortunately, the flow of traffic stopped as soon as moved into this lane, while the traffic flow in the left lane resumed. All behind me now undertook me on the left lane and I watched them moving ahead of me.
What seemed to be a clever decision does not seem to be the best decision but given the circumstances, that seems to be the most appropriate decision (switching lanes with a hope of overtaking others but get undertaken by people behind you). Some times this works perfectly towards our goals but sometimes we are let down. May be it all depends on lane usage and the time of switch
I don’t think this is any different in our career moves, changing lanes with hopes to reach our goals faster. I think the outcome depends on what we want against what we can compromise!
My Experience
I have tried to look back on my professional life so far and try document some of the important events, observations and the feelings that I have come across till now. Almost like a diary of important things that have happened or have influenced me !

An Argument on Arguments
I have a new colleague who sits just opposite to me and the office arrangement is such that I will have to look into his face if I move my head from my laptop.
He generally seems to be happy to have arguments and I am happy at least that he accepts if he is wrong.
so this was one such argument actually about Argument itself as I commented him that one of them in the argument is always ignorant. As usual he challenged and wanted me to explain how could I ever make such a statement.
So I started explaining of why an argument should arise in first place:-
1. One does not want to listen what you have to say
2. He does not understand
So, my colleague was happy so far but he did not give up. He said yes, you are right but it does not means that one if ignorant at all times as the other might have something really worth while experience the thrid reason of why there should be an argument.
3. He pulls out his past experience to conclude that he does not want to accept the conclusion and hence the argument. And he probably belives strongly and hence argues
4. May be he has a valid argument probably an alternate way of doing things
and also stated that may be out of argument we get a different option :-)
I felt yap, probably he is true.
Well, to conclude i accepted as I felt what he said made sense to me.

Three Months
I am not talking about someone pregnant for three months but about a college who has got a big connection to three months.
He works in the same company as I am and one day when I was talking to him about his life he had a great story behind to tell me.
He joined the company within in three months of his completion of bachelor’s course.
He tried for his higher studies for three months from the time he joined the company and lost it. He had to accept the hard truth and it took almost three months for his to convince himself.
Within three months from then he got an opportunity fly across the continent; stayed in US for three months on his first trip.
He was a technical consultant and due to his nature of job he had to visit different countries and never he has stayed in any country for more than three months.
He got married and it was three months for his marriage from the time he met his life partner.
Finally he decided to quit the organization and worked in some other company but could not continue for more than three months and returned back to his previous employer.
Got married in three months from the time he first met his life partner.
Within three months of his marriage he had to travel again :-(
Due to family constrains he decided to take his family for a for a long term opportunity and stay for a while in US.
But seems the three month spell casted on him still has an effect.
He had to frequently change his stint in different places in US.
Finally landed up in Chicago and took three months to get him settled.
He is now in UK for the last three months. Hope his three month spell casted is broken at least here and he continues to live in peace for more than three months at one place.

Summa Iru
This was one of the times when I was at home and didn’t know what to do. So, like any software funky, i started browsing. so not knowing what to search for just typed a word summa. Lol there was some content on the You tube. It was all about a swamiji giving some bhashan but fortunately it was in Tamil. Anyway I didn’t know how to spend time, decided to hear what the swamiji had to say.
He was talking about a poet Arunagirinathar who lived in Tamilnadu. He was the composer of Thiruppugaz, a set of poems praising Lord Murugan. The story starts when Arunagirinathar attempts to kill himself by jumping from the top of the temple tower. Just then Lord Murugan appeared in front of him and gave him a secret manthra. The Swamiji then paused and said do you know what was that great manthra? "Summa Iru, Sollara", means "Just be quite and don’t say anything". The swamiji further elaborated that it means not to just sit idle but to keep our mind in a state of stillness as it is always fond of wandering. If you can keep you mind in a still state without thinking of anything else, you will be in the present which will be a great present in our life. Thus he continued for some more time elaborating more on this...
The next day when I was in office, I got a short break in between meetings and as usual I started thinking on too many things in my small brain and suddenly the word "Summa Iru" also dropped into my mind.
Suddenly had a thought swamiji had really said something that is true. So again I did a Google search but with the exact word “Summa Iru” what else you can think doing rather than using a search engine if you happen to be a software engineer. Phew, there was lots of links related to this word. One of them was a thesis work submitted by a student and he added lots and lots of information which I was not able to digest.
Following is the actual song along with its meaning from the site Summa Iru - Power of Silence
Song
Semmaan Magalaith Thirudum Thirudan
Pemmaan Murugan Piravaan Iravaan
Summaa Iru Sollara Enralume
Ammaa Porul Onrum Arindhilane
Translation
"The Stealer who kidnapped Valli, born to the red deer;
That glorious Murugan, deathless and unborn -
When He, speechless, instructed me 'Be Silent',
What wonder! Even a single object I knew not."
Explanation
"What a wonder! When Lord Murugan - the stealer who kidnapped Valli
born of a red deer, the Glorious One, the birthless and deathless
One -instructed me through silence to 'Be Silent', Lo! I knew no object of the world."
Was really wondering how a simple word "Summa Iru" that we use day in and day out has so much of philosophical meaning!

Opportunity knocks at the wrong time
I have come across many people who are really talented but end up doing some dumb jobs. When talking more with them I found that there are only two reasons
1. They did not get right opportunity
2. They got the opportunity but perhaps not at the right time.
I know how bad is this pain to long for something that keeps you for longing for long.
I have noticed many times the opportunity always knocks at the wrong time.
Who in the world of software does not dream for travel abroad? I got my opportunity to visit United States twice.
First time, couple of weeks before my marriage and I had to let it go because both had fixed dates and nothing much can be done about it.
Second time, I was stuck in a project and boss bossed me out that I am not going anywhere :-). I had no other choice than to accept as he was the BOSS.
One of my friend and school mate. He did his studies and went to US for higher studies and I use to think perhaps he was lucky chap as he got admission to the best colleges in Chennai, India.
But I was wrong and it turned out to be a torture for him.
He completed his course but at the height of recession period in US and followed by Sept 11 attacks in US, his career was at stake. He completed another Masters by the time searching for a job.
He got a job after all this pain and the moment he got a job he has some serious problems in his family that forced him to visit home within a week of his joining.
You would have guessed what would have happened by this time. Yeph, when he came back they have already replaced him with some one and again he was jobless.
At last he has to decide to continue suffering all alone or with his parents and he decided the later.
At least now he is somewhat settled in a good organization in a great position which I really feel happy about.
One of my college, wanted a change from my team, I had let him go for I didn’t want him to be in a situation as I was! He is now in UK but doing a dumb job… Not sure you call him lucky or got a wrong opportunity or right opportunity at the wrong place.
I am not sure if Opportunity always knocks at the wrong time or we are not lucky enough

The More Ridicules The More it Sticks…
Not sure how many of you were fortunate to have nick names.
Generally the nick names are created based on some funny incidents or events, characteristics, mannerism, place from where they come from etc.
Generally nick names stick for some time say within a small group; the more ridiculous they are the more it sticks to that person. As time passes, people even forget their original names and the nick names become the person’s identity.
Thought the incidents that give rise to the nick names may be all the more funny, they help remember the person and give an ever lasting memory of the person in our mind.
A peculiar characteristic I have come noticed is they rhyme in nature.
like Quarter Govindan
Bike Bala
Problem Prema
Even after a decade I still remember many of my school and college mates with their nick names but unfortunately I have forgotten their original names and faces too.
To name a few
Quarter – This chap was always use his pocket money to buy a quarter bottle of hot drinks and hence his name.
Issss…. – O holy god, this is the name of our maths teacher and he had a manarism of sounding like a snake issssss…… before and after he starts a sentence
Satti / Sat – because his head was like a vessel
Brit Billu – O, this is one of my junior, seems he was prised for looking like a film hero and his friends gave him the name Billu, not sure on the exacts but I added Brit as he is in Great Britain now !
Kokila – this is a male because he was in love with the girl Kokila his name became that. Not sure if he married her.
The one I can ever forget is
Monthly Pig Madhavan – Well, this is a funny incident that happened during my school days. There was fight between two so called gang leaders and out came the name for one of those folks. When the teacher asked them he told that the other chap has cursed him to become a pig during start of every month – God knows why? From then on he became to be known as Monthly Pig and people forgot his real name Madhavan.
These names are also used in many films like
Loduku pandi,
Patta kathi bhairavan
Jambazar jaggu
Adae adae manohar
And the list goes on.....
Do you have any nick names that you would like to share with me?

Together they inspired me
Inspiration in artistic composition refers to an irrational and unconscious burst of creativity. Literally, the word means "breathed upon".
I am sure all of us get inspired by something or the other. I have seen an artwork in my office cafeteria. It had a small statement that the art is an inspiration of desert sand pattern.
I have come across people who are inspirations for others. These people are self motivating and they try to do something different for what ever reasons.
This works well if they have like minded members tagging along with them. Then the inspiration takes a shape into action.
One of my college, I had heard of him before he started working with me. This chap keeps writing of what ever he comes across. In fact he goes to the level of writing a blog about the damages made by his manager. Not sure to call it as guts, but to look things in a positive sprit it’s an incident that looked funny to him.
I got inspired on his writings and started writing blogs. Lol, day by day I started writing more and assume it has improved. This chap is always there to comment on them.
This is another incident that happened in my office.
Some of my colleges who were young and energetic had always wanting to do something. Because they were a group and were living almost together they do all crazy things. Some of the crazy moments that I remember.
• They all will remove their moustache for a week
• They will all have their hair done
• They will grow French beard for a while
Perhaps there is a leader who decides what they should be doing differently for the following week.
The ultimate was coming to work wearing tie to office. There is nothing shocking if everyone is wearing a tie but unfortunately my client office is not strict in mandating any business attire.
You know what happened, even the customer them selves were wondering if they have missed something.
One of my colleague went back home to get himself dressed with a tie. Poor chap did not know the reason why people are dressed so.
Thought this can be called crazy but most of us were inspired by it. As many joined in this tie club even the boss has to accept to the group formality and was forced to join the tie club. I joined the tie club last week. To be honest it was nice to be dressed this way. Not sure if everyone in the club were inspired, I was definitely and perhaps assume others were motivated
