I have come across many people who are really talented but end up doing some dumb jobs. When talking more with them I found that there are only two reasons
1. They did not get right opportunity
2. They got the opportunity but perhaps not at the right time.
I know how bad is this pain to long for something that keeps you for longing for long.
I have noticed many times the opportunity always knocks at the wrong time.
Who in the world of software does not dream for travel abroad? I got my opportunity to visit United States twice.
First time, couple of weeks before my marriage and I had to let it go because both had fixed dates and nothing much can be done about it.
Second time, I was stuck in a project and boss bossed me out that I am not going anywhere :-). I had no other choice than to accept as he was the BOSS.
One of my friend and school mate. He did his studies and went to US for higher studies and I use to think perhaps he was lucky chap as he got admission to the best colleges in Chennai, India.
But I was wrong and it turned out to be a torture for him.
He completed his course but at the height of recession period in US and followed by Sept 11 attacks in US, his career was at stake. He completed another Masters by the time searching for a job.
He got a job after all this pain and the moment he got a job he has some serious problems in his family that forced him to visit home within a week of his joining.
You would have guessed what would have happened by this time. Yeph, when he came back they have already replaced him with some one and again he was jobless.
At last he has to decide to continue suffering all alone or with his parents and he decided the later.
At least now he is somewhat settled in a good organization in a great position which I really feel happy about.
One of my college, wanted a change from my team, I had let him go for I didn’t want him to be in a situation as I was! He is now in UK but doing a dumb job… Not sure you call him lucky or got a wrong opportunity or right opportunity at the wrong place.
I am not sure if Opportunity always knocks at the wrong time or we are not lucky enough
I have tried to look back on my professional life so far and try document some of the important events, observations and the feelings that I have come across till now. Almost like a diary of important things that have happened or have influenced me !

The More Ridicules The More it Sticks…
Not sure how many of you were fortunate to have nick names.
Generally the nick names are created based on some funny incidents or events, characteristics, mannerism, place from where they come from etc.
Generally nick names stick for some time say within a small group; the more ridiculous they are the more it sticks to that person. As time passes, people even forget their original names and the nick names become the person’s identity.
Thought the incidents that give rise to the nick names may be all the more funny, they help remember the person and give an ever lasting memory of the person in our mind.
A peculiar characteristic I have come noticed is they rhyme in nature.
like Quarter Govindan
Bike Bala
Problem Prema
Even after a decade I still remember many of my school and college mates with their nick names but unfortunately I have forgotten their original names and faces too.
To name a few
Quarter – This chap was always use his pocket money to buy a quarter bottle of hot drinks and hence his name.
Issss…. – O holy god, this is the name of our maths teacher and he had a manarism of sounding like a snake issssss…… before and after he starts a sentence
Satti / Sat – because his head was like a vessel
Brit Billu – O, this is one of my junior, seems he was prised for looking like a film hero and his friends gave him the name Billu, not sure on the exacts but I added Brit as he is in Great Britain now !
Kokila – this is a male because he was in love with the girl Kokila his name became that. Not sure if he married her.
The one I can ever forget is
Monthly Pig Madhavan – Well, this is a funny incident that happened during my school days. There was fight between two so called gang leaders and out came the name for one of those folks. When the teacher asked them he told that the other chap has cursed him to become a pig during start of every month – God knows why? From then on he became to be known as Monthly Pig and people forgot his real name Madhavan.
These names are also used in many films like
Loduku pandi,
Patta kathi bhairavan
Jambazar jaggu
Adae adae manohar
And the list goes on.....
Do you have any nick names that you would like to share with me?

Together they inspired me
Inspiration in artistic composition refers to an irrational and unconscious burst of creativity. Literally, the word means "breathed upon".
I am sure all of us get inspired by something or the other. I have seen an artwork in my office cafeteria. It had a small statement that the art is an inspiration of desert sand pattern.
I have come across people who are inspirations for others. These people are self motivating and they try to do something different for what ever reasons.
This works well if they have like minded members tagging along with them. Then the inspiration takes a shape into action.
One of my college, I had heard of him before he started working with me. This chap keeps writing of what ever he comes across. In fact he goes to the level of writing a blog about the damages made by his manager. Not sure to call it as guts, but to look things in a positive sprit it’s an incident that looked funny to him.
I got inspired on his writings and started writing blogs. Lol, day by day I started writing more and assume it has improved. This chap is always there to comment on them.
This is another incident that happened in my office.
Some of my colleges who were young and energetic had always wanting to do something. Because they were a group and were living almost together they do all crazy things. Some of the crazy moments that I remember.
• They all will remove their moustache for a week
• They will all have their hair done
• They will grow French beard for a while
Perhaps there is a leader who decides what they should be doing differently for the following week.
The ultimate was coming to work wearing tie to office. There is nothing shocking if everyone is wearing a tie but unfortunately my client office is not strict in mandating any business attire.
You know what happened, even the customer them selves were wondering if they have missed something.
One of my colleague went back home to get himself dressed with a tie. Poor chap did not know the reason why people are dressed so.
Thought this can be called crazy but most of us were inspired by it. As many joined in this tie club even the boss has to accept to the group formality and was forced to join the tie club. I joined the tie club last week. To be honest it was nice to be dressed this way. Not sure if everyone in the club were inspired, I was definitely and perhaps assume others were motivated

My Trip to Paris from UK
A big advantage of working at onsite is visiting countries. You will be more fortunate if you get an opportunity to work in Europe as you can travel to multiple countries, multiple times (no offence / defence on this).
We (my family and our cognizant colleuges) to visit Paris during last Christmas Eve (2006). Well, of course definitely need some amount of planning if you are visiting with your family no question of planning.
As we visited in the peak winter the temperature was less than 3 degrees for our entire trip of 3 nights and 4 days.
We started on 24th Dec from London waterloo to Paris Garu-du-Nord, thought Eurostar. Travelling through Euro star is really a good experience as it travels through a tunnel under the sea connecting UK and Europe. You can visit http://www.eurostar.com for more information.
We started at 8am from London. It took 2Hrs and 40Min to reach Paris, local time 12:30pm.
Fortunately we booked our hotel with in 100meters of the station and hence saved lot of time in getting our self ready to visit the city.
The very important places that you should visit in Paris are the following:
Arc de Triomph:
Commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon, shortly after his victory at Austerlitz. There are four huge sculptures at the bases of the four pillars. These commemorate The Triumph of 1810 (Cortot); Resistance , and Peace (both by Etex); and The Departure of the Volunteers, more commonly known by the name La Marseillaise (Rude).
Engraved around the top of the Arch are the names of major victories won during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. The names of less important victories, as well as those of 558 generals, are to found on the inside walls. Generals whose names are underlined died in action.
Beneath the Arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars.
Musée du Louvre
Not sure if this has got popular after the Da-vinci-code movie.
The Musée du Louvre, the former home of the kings of France, is for two centuries one now of the largest museums in the world. its collections are distributed into 7 departments. The world famous painting of Monalisa is here behind a bullet proof glass.
Photography is not allowed inside the museum. If you are art loving, it would definitely a day is not sufficient.
Notre Dame de
Its a gothic masterpiece. Notre Dame, conceived by Maurice de Sully, was built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries (1163-1345). Road distances in France are calculated on the basis of the "0 km" marked on the square in front of the cathedral.
Eiffel Tower
The most famous monument in the world (317 metres, 10,100 tonnes). Built by Gustave Eiffel in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition of which it was the star. Information, historical and technical facts on all floors, show-window/office of Gustave Eiffel on the third floor.
The tower has three levels. There is a lift till the third level. You can see entire Paris from the top of tower. It’s really a wonderful experience.
You should visit the tower during the evening times to see the light effects. The light effects will last for 15min and will happen for every one hour.
Versailles Palace
Take the plunge into the world of Louis XIV at the heart of the Castle of Versailles. The palace hasGrand Apartments, Hall of Mirrors and the Queen's Apartment. Most of the ceilings are painted and if you love art you will love to stay in Versailles. The other side of the palace has formal gardens "a la Francaise". You can wander around the groves and pools where the magnificent display of fountains reveals the skill and artistry of three centuries of French Garden design and engineering.
River Cruise
If you are in a very short trip to visit Paris, I recommend you to take River cruise. Even otherwise, you can take this tour on Seine as it gives you the unique opportunity to discover Paris, its history and its major landmarks including: Place de l'Opera, Place de la Concorde, Champs-Elysees, Arc de Triumph, Place du Trocadero, Eiffel Tower, Invalides, Pont Neuf, Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, Luxembourg Gardens and Saint-Germain des Pres and much more!
Disney Land
A trip to Paris is not complete without visiting Disney Land. This will require at least one full dedicated day to visit all the attractions in Disney Land. It has rides for both children’s and adults and of course grownup's can watch us all the time.
This theme park has the theme park and Walt Disney studios. I have not been to studios but I can say it will be equally good.
Invalides
The most significant event in the history of Les Invalides however, is unquestionably the return of the body of Napoléon in 1840. After seven years of negotiation with the British government, Louis-Philippe, King of France, obtained permission to repatriate the Emperor's remains from St. Helena.
After arriving at Le Havre, it was brought up the Seine and landed at Paris at Courbevoie. On 15 December 1840 a state funeral was held, and despite a winter snowstorm, the hearse proceeded from the Arc de Triomphe down the Champs-Elysées, across the Place de la Concorde to the Esplanade and finally to the cupola in St Jerome's Chapel until the tomb - designed by Visconti - was completed. On 3 April 1861 Napoléon I came to his final rest in the crypt under de dome.
Three nights and 4 days just went like that and had to return back... but my experience still lives in my memory which I can cherish for long.

Thirupattur Brammapuiswarar Temple
This is a Brahma temple in Tirupattur near Tirchy which I got to visit during my visit to India on vacation.
The main deity of this temple is Siva in the name of Brahmapurisawar.Brammapuriswarar temple is a temple for Brahma.
I was told that this is the only place were we can find a separate sanadhi/ worship place for Brahma.
Story as I heard and remembered about this temple:
It was during the times when Brahma was cursed to perform tapas towards Lord Siva to re gain his creation duty.
He came to this village where he established and worshipped 11 Siva lingams and worshipped them. The lord then became happy and empowered him to continue with his creation duty.
The Brahma here is called "Thalaiyelughtai Matrum Brahma". The lord (Brahma) here is empowered to change our destiny for Good. Hence anyone visiting this temple will have their long pending wishes not fulfilled due to destiny will be fulfilled.
The Brahma idol here is worshipped with turmeric. The prasadam given at the sanadhi is also turmeric
Another highlight of this temple is this temple has Jeeva Samadhi of Pathanjali. He is the compiler of the Yoga Sutra.
Temple as I recollect:This seemed to be a very old temple build long ago. This can be seen from the pillar mandapam and the size of the temple which is very huge.
There are three sanadhi for Siva - Brahampuriswarar,Godess and Brahma. The Jeeva Samathi of Pathanjali is on the corridor next to Braham's sanadhi.
How to reach here:
Thirupattur is a remote village around 30Kms from Tirchy. Thiruchirappali is well-connected by rail to almost all the major cities of India.
Buses are available from almost all areas of places of TamilNadu.

Object Oriented and Incarnation of God
This incident dates back a decade when Ramayana was telecasted in Doordarshan (DD). Not sure how many of you watched Ramayana in DD.
Obviously anyone who knows Ramayana will also know that both Ram and Parasuram met during Sita's syamwar.
The immediate question that stuck my mind after this scene was how come Vishnu take avatar of Ram and also take avatar of Parasuram at the same time? (I was not matured enough to understand the philosophy behind it).
Though I was able to understand that God can take avatars but not two avatars at the same time. How he be in two different forms in the same place? That sounded strange and never have I heard any similar stories.
The question was in my mind unanswered till the time I learned Object Oriented Programming for Java.
During my early days of learning java it was really tough to under the Object Oriented Concepts. But as the time passed, i was able to see everything in the form of Object well of course everything was actually in Objects but its only then I realised it.
In Object Oriented Programming there are concepts like Inheritance, Abstraction, Polymorphism, Class, Objects etc.
Inheritance: In object-oriented programming, inheritance is a way to form new classes (instances of which are called objects) using classes that have already been defined. The new classes, known as derived classes, take over (or inherit) attributes and behaviour of the pre-existing classes, which are referred to as base classes (or ancestor classes). It is intended to help reuse of existing code with little or no modification.
Refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance_(computer_science)
Abstract Class: An abstract class, or abstract base class (ABC), is one that is designed only as a parent class and from which child classes may be derived, and which is not itself suitable for instantiation. Abstract classes are often used to represent abstract concepts or entities. The incomplete features of the abstract class are then shared by a group of sibling sub-classes which add different variations of the missing pieces.
Refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstract_class#Abstract_and_concrete_classes
As per this, I concluded that Lord Vishn can be considered as an Abstract Class while both Ram and Parasuram can be considered as inherited concrete classes with their own properties but still a concrete manifestation of the Lord Vishnu.
How wonderful to know that even God’s are Object Oriented?

O! I am in a Big Worry
O! I am in a big worry that is what I always think about myself. I worry for anything and everything like say for example:
My daughter is just two years old but she has lost her canine teeth so I am in a worry!
My boss has got a promotion that makes me worry - worry because you don’t know how the new boss is going to deal with things and particularly me!
My friend has bought a big car, I am in a worry because his company is paying more for the less work he does than me!
My client manager does not take any decision and sits like a dumb ass! - That worries me a lot
I got worry my wife with all these and she gets worried because of me.
O - holy god, Why should I be worrying so much when I don’t have to worry for things that are beyond my control ?
So, I went to a swamiji seeking his advice. You know, he told me a small story
He came across a prince who has lost his Kingdom, He had to live in forest with his wife and brother, his wife was kidnapped by someone - With this much told he asked me if I am in such a pathetic situation?
I said - definitely not this bad! – He said Ok Good to hear that by the way do you know who was that? I said no – He said the prince was later known as King Rama – King of Ayodhya.
He started again: You know, here is another chap he came across who promised that he will never lie and just keep his promise he ended up loosing his Kingdom, his wife became a slave, he son died and he worked in a cemetery
He then questioned me if I have any such worries – I said nop, not at all, I said they are not worries but more a pain to pass through
He said O’ is it so? How do you compare your worries with these? When compared with it, mine seems to be simple.
So you got the answer!
I said yes, I understand that this is simple when compared with these but my worries are bigger for me and why should I compare with these?
He said, yes, that’s the message, you just stop comparing yourself or events associated to you with others.
You worry because you compare events associated to you with everything else and when you can compare all things why not compare your worry as well?
As long as you don’t compare you will not have worries because you do not have the power to change certain things and the best is to accept such things.
After all everything has to change and this will also change hopefully for good.

As long as you don’t compare you will not have worries because you do not have the power to change certain things and the best is to accept such things.
After all everything has to change and this will also change hopefully for good.

Leela - 2: Master under Meditation
This incident was during the days when as a company we were aiming towards CMM certification and the Master was moved from Project Manger role to Quality Manager role by this time. Unfortunately, he owned to get CMM certification for our company.
So, we had some CMM consultants flying to our place to provide us 'Gyan' on what this is all about. The world of Quality manager till such time was limited to only bugs and it took a lead assessor to fly to our place at the company's cost to make him understand Quality processes are just not limited to bugs but it is far beyond that.
Target dates were aligned from the CEO, the project got kickedoff and our clock started ticking towards achieving our goal.
To ensure every one is aware and contributes to this noble initiative, we had regular team meetings in our office pantry area where there was enough room for all of us to sit. The documents were projected on a big white wall near the pantry area and all of us had to listen what the SEPG (Software Engineering Process Group) member had to say. People who had gone through the process of acquiring training on quality process would definitely understand how boring the sessions would be unless the presenter is humorous to crack jokes during his presentation. I mean for one who is generally with a coding / design mind set.
During couple of such presentations Master use to close his eyes and sit quietly with out much movements. Well, we all knew that he was sleeping as we heard a mild snore but we only whispered among ourselves to show others watch Master sleeping.
It so happened Master suddenly woke up with the sound of our giggle. Immediately without any hesitation he simply said that he was just closing his eyes and was in a Transcendental Meditation.
I really appreciated his presence of Mind thought no body believed him :-). From then on, he use to sleep without any worries as all of us knew he is in Transcendental Meditation (Deep Sleep) :-)

Master's Leelas -1
I am back to my master's leela's during my early days in the career. You can ready my post Master if you are keen to learn more about him.
Being a project manager and not knowing anything about the application that is being built inspire of multiple knowledge training sessions, one has to spend lots of time to make him understand what we are trying to explain.
As a software engineer we always have problems with the application. The application (web application) is suppose to schedule a resource and the bug reported was that there is some time zone problem.
So to understand and find a fix for the issue a brainstorming session was called and for obvious reasons master was also called.
He was in his own world thinking for a scenario that he can talk at the same time trying to pick up the discussion from what is going on..
The discussion went on with multiple scenarios and Master suddenly raised his voice to explain a scenario that stuck his mind.
Makalae! (children) being a web application, what happens if some one is travelling in a flight from India to US and in the mid way he is trying to schedule a resource?
Though we tried explaining him that the application is not intended to be used by a person who is travelling but he never accepted it. He in fact came up with the test case but we put him down that we cannot travel just for this.. Perhaps we can change the time zones in the computer to simulate a similar situation.
Believe me it really took so much effort to make him understand the scenario can be created by changing the time zone in the computer and we do not need anyone to travel for this sake.

Climbing up the ladder
I am sure every employee keeps waiting for his promotion at least once in a year so that he can climb one step in the ladder. But there are very few fortunate soles who get it before completion of 1 year while most get it immediately after two year.
With respect to the software industry every company will have its own traits against which it will compare its employees. I am sure every company follows this strictly while the bug is in the subjective judgment of the Manager. If the employee is on the good books of the manager then he obviously get a plus points. No matter the poor guy who would have been really good in what was expected out of him. He would have exceeded all his expectations and perhaps even beyond but does not get any additional points.
The conflict now is who needs to be given more points when compared with the favourite and a hardworking guy. Obviously the one who is close to the manager gets an easy pass rather than the genuine guy who falls into all turmoil.
Thought theoretically the Manager should not have any bias, hallow effect, Horn effect etc., but practically I am not sure how many managers can be out of all these bias ? After all he is also an employee and his deeds will be judged by his Boss !
practically from the lesson I have learned so far , all that should happen is:
*You need to have a good relationship with your boss and definitely with your Boss's Boss as you do not know when your boss will leave you to graze green paddy fields !
*Update your boss and if his boss so that you get into the good books
*Ofcourse you definitely need to have some percentage of job knowledge
*Share all good things and try to manage situations to the most extent possible but keep the Bosses informed - this is for your back up support.
*Volunteer to take responsibility but make sure you are not drowned as you have your own things to do.
*Keep even the bad things posted to your boss and if required to his boss aswell
Hope with this you will be in a better visibility and position to fall into the good books of your boss and there by a candidate for promotion nomination.
